First exit polls show some 96 percent said ‘yes’ for independent Kurdistan

(KurdPress) – Initial results in the independence referendum of the Kurdistan Region show that 95.97 percent of people voted in favor of separation from Baghdad and the formation of an independent Kurdistan state.

According to Rudaw TV, the first exit polls show that 95.97 percent people living in the region said “yes” while 4.07 percent said “no.”

Despite warnings from the Baghdad administration and abroad, including from Ankara and Washington, the region held a referendum on Monday for a separate Kurdistan state in northern Iraq.

The referendum was held amid strong opposition from regional states and world powers as well as the UN.
