Washington, DC (TFC) – The American Flag is the symbol of the United States, land of the free and home of the brave. A beacon of freedom to the world, shining like Alexandria’s lighthouse, it says “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” At least, that is what it was supposed to mean.

Social media is in an uproar over the alteration of the American flag to celebrate the right of homosexuals to get married. The flag of the United States means nothing anymore. It’s a bumper sticker. It’s a mascot. It’s a propaganda tool, and nothing more.

See, despite the major issues we see when we look back, this country was founded as a nation that guaranteed its citizens an amazing range of rights. It was a nation founded on reason. It was a nation that truly did try to set the bar for individual freedom and liberty. The American Revolution sparked scores of other revolutions across the globe. People wanted to attain the individual liberty that Americans enjoyed. As time progressed, the country corrected many of its initial mistakes. It started to extend those rights to more and more classes of people, and in doing so, it became a very prosperous nation. Then, just like all nations that become too prosperous, the citizens became too comfortable for their own good. They became complacent. The country kept extending rights to more and more classes of people, but the rights that were being extended shrank. People still cheered about their freedom. The Bill of Rights is dead. It’s just a list of things attached to the back of a document that nobody cares about anymore. The flag is dead, too.

The flag means nothing because all of the things it stood for are dead. It’s only pulled out and dusted off as a means of invoking some nationalistic or patriotic fervor to push an agenda. That is it. It’s an icon you can slap on the bumper of your car to show your support for the troops overseas, even though you don’t have a clue where they are or why they’re fighting. It’s something you can put in the front yard on certain holidays so you fit in with the neighbors; it’s just like your Christmas lights, Easter eggs, Pumpkins, and so on. You don’t have a clue why you’re doing it. Nationalism has replaced reason in this country.

While true Americans were lamenting a rainbow colored flag, they forgot about these alterations to the American flag:

Every one of those images was on the social media profile of someone condemning the evil gays for modifying the American flag.

There are probably a few die-hard patriots out there that understand that the flag is less important than the ideas it is supposed to represent, but there aren’t many. Without those ideas it is just cloth and dye. Nothing more. So, when you cease to care about the inalienable rights of others, your flag worship has nothing to do with this country or freedom. It has to do with blind obedience to the government. When you hold the flag up as some sacred symbol that can only be used in ways you see fit, you have forgotten what the flag symbolizes. At this point in the history of the United States, the flag means nothing. Stop pretending like it does.
