Gaza, Occupied Territories (nsnbc) – A blast at a Hamas training base in Palestine’s Gaza Strip injured dozens. The exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined but it is clear that no external forces were involved.

The Gaza Strip is, despite a 2014 agreement about the establishment of Palestinian Unity Government still exclusively ruled by the Muslim Brotherhood associated Hamas. The spokesman for Hamas’ Interior Ministry in the Gaza Strip, Eyad Bozum, told the press that authorities were still in the process of investigating the exact cause of the explosion.

Bozum added that it is currently unclear whether the blast at the training base had been caused by a “working accident” or whether the explosion had been caused by left-overs from the 2014 war Israel launched against the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued a precautionary statement, stressing that the IDF had not been involved in the explosion.

Hamas’ public health official in the Gaza Strip, Ashraf al-Kidra, told the press that “dozens of people had been injured, several of them seriously.” Al-Kidra could not yet provide the exact number of casualties. The explosion occurred Thursday afternoon. The blast and column of smoke rising from the base could be observed from a distance of several miles.

The training base is used by Hamas’ military wing, the Izz Al-Din Al-Qassam Brigades. The Qassam Brigades are, among others, known for their manufacturing of crude, unguided rockets at Hamas bases and in underground workshops.

The explosive force of these rocket’s warheads is approximately equivalent to that of a small-caliber mortar shell. Thursday’s explosion, however, suggests that more or something bigger than one of these rockets had exploded.
