(TFC) – Emily Lance urinated on an American flag and posted the video to Facebook. Predictably, the patriotic community of Americans jumped up from their chairs and demanded she be deported, raped, executed, and one even offered $3000 dollars as a bounty. They all played into Lance’s hands.
Her goal was to clearly demonstrate that most Americans are, in fact, traitors. It was a blinding success. The flag is a symbol; as recently addressed in another article on The Fifth Column, it represents ideas. Those ideas are embodied in the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. One of those ideas is the Freedom of Speech. Contrary to the idiots attacking Lance, the Freedom of Speech does include freedom of expression. It’s been upheld many times by the Supreme Court. In fact, defacing the American Flag has been upheld by the Supreme Court…. twice.
This is where the American cries crocodile tears about the soldier he probably only cares about when it’s time to try a plea for emotion during a debate. Here’s the thing; soldiers swore an oath. This is the beginning of that oath:
I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;
They swore to defend the US Constitution. That would include the Bill of Rights, which includes the First Amendment. Do you know what word isn’t anywhere in that oath? Flag.
So those attacking her are actually betraying what people fought and died for. They fought and died to defend the Constitution. They fought and died to defend ideas. Many are too stupid or too lazy to attempt to understand those ideas, so they just hug a brightly-colored cloth.
If you put the flag above the ideas it represents, you’re a traitor. You’ve sold out to bumper sticker patriotism and are worse than Lance. You forgot what it means to be an American and betrayed everything while you cling to a symbol as a justification to kill the ideas that symbol is supposed to represent. You are the reason this country is headed down the road to tyranny.
Freedom is difficult. Freedom requires you allow others freedom. That includes freedom to be offensive. The only time the Freedom of Speech is needed is when the speech is offensive. Small talk does not need First Amendment protection. Controversial speech does. The First Amendment protects the people from the government. There is no promise that others will listen, nor a promise they won’t scorn you. Lance’s ability and freedom to engage in this form protest is never and will never be in jeopardy.
Do you want to know why she did it? To prove to many of you that you’re a traitor. To prove to many of you that you’ve sold out. To prove to many of you that you’ve broken your oath. She succeeded.
Freedom is much like respect. It’s earned. If you don’t understand it, how can you possibly hope to earn it?
In short, I will stand with Emily Lance before I stand with anyone seeking to take away her rights.
