IS Destroys Natural Gas Facility, Leaves Millions Of Syrians Without Heat

Syria (GPA) – The Islamic State released video of militants detonating bombs inside a crucial Hayyan gas facility over the weekend, effectively leaving millions of Syrians without heat for the winter.

The gas facility was located in the eastern countryside of the Homs governorate, northeast of Damascus. The video released Sunday, showed IS militants wiring explosives throughout the facility and then the detonation from outside.

More specifically, the facility is located in the Shaer gas field which IS is gradually losing control of in the wake of attacks by other militant groups and air campaigns by the governments of Russia, Turkey, and Syria. The gas field was originally taken by IS in 2014.

IS control of the fields has been sporadic since 2014 but was taken this time during a wider campaign by the group to dislodge the Syrian army from the city of Palmyra. According to the Syrian army, their counter offensive is being moved forward from the expected spring start date as a response to the destruction of the facility that has left millions of Syrians without heat.
