Hollywood, California (TFC) – For whatever reason, when someone obtains some notoriety through movies or television, the American people tend to place more stock in what those people say, even if the clebrities don’t have a clue what they are talking about. These celebrities are the perfect tool for successful propaganda campaigns. An endorsement from a Hollywood A-lister goes a long way with the American people, especially with those demographics that couldn’t find the country in question on a labeled map. Those endorsements have consequences that the people in Hollywood never feel, and are rarely held accountable for, or even reminded of. Most recently, one of those endorsements contributed to hundreds of children being blown apart.
Celebrities that are typically very anti-war endorsed military actions because it was trendy. Innocents died and war crimes were committed, all under the smiling approval of tinseltown. They weren’t obscure celebrities either. Current stars like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sarah SIlverman, Kelsey Grammer, and Seth Rogan all signed on to a wartime propaganda effort. They were accompanied by scores of lesser known celebs and fading stars like Roseanne Barr.
About a year ago, this gaggle of Hollywood celebrities signed a document that supported the murder of over 500 children. The document was produced amid press releases and fanfare in the midst of a war, and it served to support one of the belligerents of that war. It was during the latest flare up between Israelis and Palestinians, and while the document maintained a shallow pretense of supporting peace, it was firmly in support of Israeli actions. Those actions have now been classified as war crimes, and they have led to the deaths of 2,252 Palestinians. 65% were civilians. More than 500 of those were children.
More than 500 dead children and Hollywood toasted and smiled. The kids were the victims of indiscriminate bombing campaigns conducted by the Israeli Air Force. The number of dead is dwarfed by the number of wounded. These celebrities may go hug the survivors for a photo op or to appease their conscience, but they’ll have to be careful not to show their disgust as their fingers slip into the divots in the victim’s back, caused by the white phosphorus that was used against civilians.
The signatures and accompanying propaganda blitz not only served to justify the “war,” but all of Israel’s other policies for dealing with the Palestinian question. It’s hard to call it a war when one of the belligerents is in a walled-off city from which they cannot escape and they maintain no air force or air defenses. It’s not war, it’s slaughter. It’s ethnic cleansing.
That may seem like a strong word, but the simple definition is the removal or execution of an unwanted ethnic or religious group from a specific geographic area. The apartheid, settlements, and removal of the Palestinian people is ethnic cleansing. People may attempt to justify it however they wish, but it is ethnic cleansing. Just because it is done with bulldozers and precision munitions instead of machetes doesn’t make it any less horrible than the ethnic cleansing that the West pays token tribute to in Africa.
The signatories of this petition advanced the Israeli war effort and are certainly complicit in the death and destruction that war caused.
Perhaps it’s time for those that engage in this behavior to be reminded that their actions have consequences. Perhaps it’s time for Americans to stop taking their foreign policy advice from people whose only qualification is that they can read a script. Some of them can’t even do that.
