Prague, Czech Republic (TFC) – The US government attempted to tell the Czech President where he should and should not travel and caused a diplomatic incident. Through its ambassador in Prague, the US government advised President Milos Zeman to not attend a World War II commemoration in Russia.

The US government’s attempt to show Russia as a diplomatically isolated country backfired when the Czech President not only ignored the US Ambassador’s advice, but banned him from attending anything other than social events at Prague Castle. President Zeman said of the incident:

“I can’t imagine the Czech ambassador in Washington would give advice to the American President where to travel. I won’t let any ambassador have a say about my foreign travels.”

Instead of setting up Russia to look like an outcast in the international community, the incident demonstrated that some nations are willing to make symbolic stands with Russia. More importantly, it demonstrated to the world that any isolation of Russia is completely manufactured by US diplomatic efforts. If Russia ever stands alone at an event honoring World War II veterans, it will do so not because the international community has chosen to ostracize the nation but rather because the United States has succeeded in bullying smaller nations.

US-Russian relations have been tense ever since the US-backed coup in Ukraine failed to transfer power quickly and resulted in a split of the country.

The diplomatic bullying that is standard practice among US Embassies is going to become much more difficult as China’s new competitor to the US-backed World Bank becomes a reality. The purse strings of the World Bank have kept many countries tied to the US out of necessity. For the first time, the international banking institution will have a direct competitor. Decades of overtly threatening US diplomacy may cause many nations to move to the Chinese-backed bank in an attempt to get out from under the thumb of Uncle Sam.

There has been no word as to whether the current US Ambassador will be recalled from Prague. There has been no public speculation as to who his replacement will be. An Ambassador that cannot conduct business with the host nation is worthless and a resignation or replacement is anticipated.
