Washington, DC (TFC) – In a post on Facebook, Franklin Graham comes out in favor of total compliance with the police state and cites the Bible as justification. Sadly the Pastor either intentionally misled his flock, or doesn’t understand the Bible.
The conservative religious leader stated:
“Listen up–Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and everybody else. Most police shootings can be avoided. It comes down to respect for authority and obedience. If a police officer tells you to stop, you stop. If a police officer tells you to put your hands in the air, you put your hands in the air. If a police officer tells you to lay down face first with your hands behind your back, you lay down face first with your hands behind your back. It’s as simple as that. Even if you think the police officer is wrong—YOU OBEY. Parents, teach your children to respect and obey those in authority. Mr. President, this is a message our nation needs to hear, and they need to hear it from you. Some of the unnecessary shootings we have seen recently might have been avoided. The Bible says to submit to your leaders and those in authority “because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.”
Let’s set aside the fact that the Biblical quote (Hebrews 13:17) was in reference to spiritual leaders, not armed men with guns acting out the commands of the state.
It would be interesting to see what study Graham gathered this information from. Let’s be very blunt. Compliance is no longer an option when dealing with law enforcement in the United States. Officers are raping people on the sides of the road and molesting children. Compliance wouldn’t solve that problem. It might be something that is not evident to the CEO of two multimillion dollar organizations. His direct compensation is more than one million dollars per year, and heads his father’s evangelical organization that controls more than $300 million in assets.
This isn’t the first time Graham has sided with totalitarian thugs that kill unarmed people. In 2009, Graham advised against seeking an arrest warrant for a genocidal lunatic in Sudan. He didn’t do this privately. He did it through a New York Times op-ed.
“I want to see justice served, but my desire for peace in Sudan is stronger. Mr. Bashir, accused of genocide and crimes against humanity, is hardly an ideal peacemaker. But given all the warring factions in Sudan, there is no guarantee that his replacement would be better.”
Well there is nothing like compromising with evil in order to gain access to Sudan for your multimillion dollar ministry. Would Jesus have compromised with a man slaughtering his neighbors, Mr. Graham?
Because of Graham and others acting as apologists for the tyrant, he is still the head of state of Sudan even though he has two sets of active warrants for war crimes. Maybe Graham will comply with tyranny for the sake of immediate gain, but most Americans will and should not.
Rather than delving into issues he obviously knows nothing about, maybe Graham should spend more time reviewing the Bible he says guides his life. Virtually every commentary and variation on the verse is crystal clear that this is directing people to submit to the teaching of spiritual leaders.
Even though the death toll from police officers climbs daily, it is unlikely that Graham will care until the killings begin to victimize his followers. Not because he will suddenly see the light, but because it will affect the donations pouring into his church’s coffers.
